BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ECONOMICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY


The BSc in Economics and Information Technology is a combined-major programme in which both disciplines are studied as core areas. It equips students with theoretical, analytical, and digital skills relevant to the social and applied sciences, preparing them for today’s data-driven and technology-oriented economy. In a developing context such as Ghana, these competencies are vital for supporting economic growth and development.

The growing digital economy has increased demand for professionals skilled in data science, programming, and algorithm development for economic and business applications. Students on this programme will therefore gain strong digital and analytical competencies for advanced data analysis and economic modelling.

The Department of Economics and Development Studies and the Department of Computer Science & Information Technology will leverage resources to enhance the skills of students pursuing the programme.

Aims of the Programme

The aims of the programme are the following:

  1. Develop analytical and computational skills necessary to model, analyse, and solve economic and business problems using IT tools.
  2. Promote critical thinking and innovation in applying IT to economic research, policy analysis, and decision-making.
  3. Provide interdisciplinary knowledge that combines core principles of economics with fundamental and applied aspects of information technology.
  4. Prepare graduates for modern careers in economics, finance, data science, and IT by providing hands-on experience with digital tools and platforms.
Objectives of the Programme

The main objectives of the programme are the following:

  1. Apply economic theories and models to analyse market behaviour, economic policies, and development strategies.
  2. Critically evaluate the role of digital technologies in economic transformation, financial systems, e-governance, and global markets.
  3. integrate IT solutions (such as database systems, programming, and digital platforms) to enhance economic analysis and business processes.
  4. Pursue further academic and professional training.

Admission Requirements

The minimum admission requirements of Central University (CU) apply. To enter the programme, applicants must meet the following admission requirements:

  • West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). 
    • Credit passes(A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, and Mathematics, plus three (3) electives in subjects such as Further Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Physics, Chemistry, Geography and History.
  • Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE). 
    • Credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, and Mathematics, plus three (3) electives in subjects such as Further Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Physics, Chemistry, Geography and History.
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Levels.
    • Passes in three (3) subjects (at least one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and Arts subject (for science students). 
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) Applicants
    • Applicants who hold an HND shall be admitted into the programme at Level 200 or 300, depending on the assessment of their diplomas in relation to the programme. 
  • Awards for Training and Higher Education (ATHE) Applicants
    • ATHE Level 3 holders will be admitted into the programme at Level 100. 
  • Mature Applicants
    • The applicants must be at least 25 years old by 31st December of the year preceding the examination. A certified copy of birth certificate is required. The date of issue the birth certificate should not be less than five (5) years from the date of the completion of the admission form. 
    • The applicant must have GCE O-Level or SSSCE/WASSCE credit passes in English Language and Core Mathematics. Applicants who do not have the required qualifications will take a Special Entrance Examination.
    • The applicant must write the Mature Students’ Entrance Examination, which consist of a general paper for all applicants and two papers in the area(s) of specialization desired.
  • Foreign Applicants
    • To be considered for admission, applicants must have qualifications equivalent to the above. Their results must also be translated into English, and they should be able to read and write in English. Prospective foreign applicants must also note that their certificates will be sent to the National Accreditation Board (NAB) for evaluation and verification.
