Programme Overview

The Central University PhD in Human Resource Management and Organisational Leadership responds to the growing demand for high-level expertise in people management and leadership across Ghana, sub-Saharan Africa, and the broader global economy. As emerging economies navigate globalisation, technological change, and the imperatives of the Sustainable Development Goals, the need for qualified HR scholars and strategic leaders has never been more critical. This programme equips graduates to address those challenges through rigorous research, evidence-based practice, and original contributions to knowledge that serve Ghana’s national development agenda and the wider African region.

Programme Approach

The programme integrates advanced HRM scholarship with leadership theory and practice, adopting a multidisciplinary approach that bridges strategic people management, organisational behaviour, and ethical governance. Students develop a deep understanding of leadership effectiveness, diversity management, cross-cultural intelligence, and evidence-based HR decision-making.

Aim of the Programme

To develop researchers, HR professionals, and leaders who can generate new insights and apply expert knowledge to complex human capital and leadership challenges facing contemporary organisations and society.

Objectives

This programme is specifically designed to:

  1. Build deep theoretical knowledge in HRM and organisational leadership theories and strategies
  2. Develop strategic HR competencies and evidence-based management practice
  3. Equip students with tools and methodologies for rigorous empirical research
  4. Generate original research addressing current challenges in HRM and leadership
  5. Apply research findings to develop innovative solutions that enhance organisational performance, employee engagement, and workplace culture
  6. Prepare graduates for careers in academia, senior HR roles, consultancy, and public sector leadership

Programme Details

Duration — Full-time: 3 years (6 semesters)

Duration — Part-time: 5 years (10 semesters)

Prior doctorate holders (PhD and DBA): Minimum 2 years to complete

Delivery mode: Blended (online + in-person) or fully in-person

Christ Temple campus, near Abossey-Okia, Accra

Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold a postgraduate master’s degree (MA, MSc, MBA, MPhil or equivalent) in HRM, Industrial Psychology, General Management, Leadership, or a related field from an accredited institution. Holders of a DBA or PhD in another field are also eligible.

MA, MSc, and MBA holders must provide evidence of research and publication.
