DOCTOR OF PHARMACY (PHARM D)
Pharmacy integrates the art and science of the preparation and standardization of drugs. An interdisciplinary field that connects the health sciences with the chemical sciences, it has a wide scope spanning the cultivation of medicinal plants, synthesis of chemical compounds of medicinal value, and analysis of medicinal agents.
As a profession, Pharmacists dispense medications, offer advice on safe use of prescriptions and conduct health and wellness screenings among other roles. Reflecting contemporary Pharmacy education trends, the Programme has been developed in consultation with practitioners from all areas of Pharmacy.
The Programme emphasizes problem solving, critical thinking, and patient-focused content and experiential opportunities across the breadth of practice.
Key Objectives
• To provide students with a core of knowledge in relevant basic sciences and research methods, education, preparation, distribution and administration of drugs and integrated body systems management;
• To provide students with skills, abilities, attitudes and values including communication skills, critical thinking, social interaction, pharmacotherapy, decision-making, professionalism and ethics that are necessary for the provision of pharmaceutical care.
Real-World Application
Pharmacy is continually expanding. Led by advances in healthcare, it has expanded beyond its traditional scope of dispensing medications. By modern practice, Pharmacy focuses on pharmaceutical care where pharmacists work with patients to determine their needs in order to optimize the use of educations. This may include among others; conduction clinical services, reviewing medication for safety and efficacy and offering up-to-date drug information to their patients.
The Pharmacy programme creates a challenging academic environment that builds leaders in patient centered care (as opposed to drug-centred care), through an emphasis on the theory and use of evidence-based learning. This will equip graduates to be adequately informed on health policy and management issues in institution, community and regulatory settings.

Laboratory/Clinical Work, Class Tests, Semester Examinations, Projects
Careers
Graduates will find employment in healthcare structures; Hospital, Community Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy and the Drug-Regulatory bodies. Other avenues include food and cosmetic industries, scientific research institutes (e.g. CSIR, CSRPM, Noguchi) and Academia among others.
Entry Requirements
Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE):
6 passes with aggregate 24 or better and including 3 core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science; and 3 Elective subjects including Biology, Chemistry,
Physics and Mathematics. All passes should be grade D (SSSCE) or better.
West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE):
6 passes with aggregate 36 or better and including 3 core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science; and 3 Elective subjects including Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics. All courses should be grade C6 (WASSCE) or better.
GCE Entrants:
Credits in 5 subjects at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics and 3 ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Mathematics.
Mature Applicants:
Applicants must be at least 25 years with Science background – Chemistry, Biology and either Physics or elective Mathematics- and must pass an examination conducted by the University. Such applicants must be holders of Bachelor of Science related degrees. (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Human Biology) or HND (Dispensing Technology/Laboratory Technology. Any application that comes without the above named qualifications will however be evaluated on its own merits.
Additional Information on Pharmacy: By a directive of the Pharmacy Council, the B. Pharm Programme may be upgraded to a 6-year Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy Programme) mid-stream.
