MSC Accounting Programme

Aim of the Programme

To produce students who will be well prepared to pursue a career in the challenging fields of accounting. The programme allows students to acquire, develop and apply advanced-level knowledge, understanding and skills within accounting. Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to make significant contributions in the area of accounting and develop a successful and satisfying career, both in the private and public sectors.

 Objectives

The objectives of the MSC Accounting programme are:

  1. To equip students with the requisite technical knowledge and managerial skills required to function effectively in funds management, and the capacity to maximise the value of shareholder wealth for long-run growth.
  2. To develop results-oriented professionals capable of functioning at the highest level of their profession, either as Accountants or finance experts in various working environments.
  3. To produce high calibre and morally sound accounting professionals with integrity in a competitive job market locally and worldwide.

Admission Requirements

  1. Applicants should possess a good first degree in accounting with a minimum of Second Class Lower division from a recognized University. Third Class applicants with a good quantitative background may also be considered for admission.
  • Applicants with professional qualifications, e.g. ACCA, CIM, CIMA, CA, can also apply.
  • All applicants must demonstrate/have a satisfactory existing level of knowledge in accounting.
  • Applicants must satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the faculty/department. These may include an interview, undertaking a preparatory programme, and a written entrance examination.

Students’ graduation:

  • Students must pass all the university-required courses and must fulfil all financial obligations.
    • Students must have an FCGPA of 2.5 and above to be eligible for graduation.
      • The Master of Science in Accounting programme shall consist of a minimum of five 3-credit courses per semester. Total credits shall not be less than 30 credits in the academic year. In addition, the student is required to present a dissertation to qualify for graduation.

Research component:

Students are supposed to have considered possible project topics: by the end of the first semester and register with a supervisor. A project proposal is then to be completed and accepted by the supervisor. Project proposal presentations will then be made. Students are expected to submit their final reports on a specific date followed by a dissertation defence.

Employment Prospects

Graduates of the programme will have job opportunities with banks, mining institutions, construction, and services sectors of the economy as accountants, treasury managers, investment portfolio managers, risk management consultants, and other finance industry players.
