MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH

PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY.

The Public Health programme of the Central University is designed to produce health professionals
who will be recognized for their dedicated service and competence in promoting healthy
populations and in providing quality health care to persons and communities. The programme
seeks to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to health promotion, disease prevention,
and community development based on an empowerment agenda within the context of deprived
and vulnerable communities in the local population of the Greater Accra Region in particular and
Ghana as a whole.
Specific curriculum within the programme would adopt a broad-based multidisciplinary approach
that delivers excellent and innovative teaching and research, to produce graduates equipped with
the necessary tools to provide health-related leadership to society. Ultimately, the Master of Public
Health programme of Central University seeks to be considered as one of the leading Public Health
training centres in Ghana and among the top ten of Global Health institutions of excellence in West
Africa.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

OVERALL GOAL OF THE PROGRAMME
The Central University MPH programme seeks to produce post-graduate students with
understanding and proven competencies necessary to achieve Public Health outcomes. The
overarching goal is to provide quality post-graduate education with a community perspective on
health, to equip students with knowledge and competencies on emerging trends in Public Health
principles and practices, to make visible positive impacts on the health of local populations in
Ghana.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
The following are the specific objectives.

  1. To offer a curriculum that produces graduates equipped with knowledge and competencies in Public Health practice
  2. To help develop and implement sustainable Public Health interventions to improve the health of populations
  3. To apply effective leadership in public health practice using ethically sound principles to promote Community Health
  4. To develop and expand learning opportunities and competencies through electivecourses, field experience, research, and dissemination

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants with Bachelors Degree in health or allied sciences such as MBChB, B.Pharm, PharmD,
BVM, DVM, BSc. or any related first degree are qualified to apply. Health professionals and other
graduates with a good first degree (a minimum of second class lower), with at least three (3) years
working experience in a relevant Public Health area can also apply. A departmental interview shall
be part of the selection of prospective candidates. International applicants must have qualifications
equivalent to the above to be considered for admission. Their results must also be translated into
English via the National Accreditation Board (NAB). International applicants should also have a
minimum CGPA of 2.5 or equivalent. All other requirements outlined in the most current
Handbook for Masters Degrees in Central University shall apply.

DURATION
The programme is full time of one and half (11/2) years (approx. 18 calendar months) duration for
regular MPH students only. Twelve (12) months for course work, six (6) months for Practicum
and Capstone
