DR. ANNA KWARLEY QUARTEY


Dr. Anna Kwarley Quartey is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences
(Pharmacognosy Session) at the School of Pharmacy, Central University. She holds a PhD and
MPhil in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and
Technology, Ghana. She also holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the same institution.
She was appointed Lecturer in 2015.
Dr. Quartey’s research interest lies in Natural Products. Her research activities focus on exploring
Natural Products, especially medicinal plants, for the treatment of diseases, evaluate the activities
of crude extracts from traditional medicinal plants and obtain data to support their traditional
uses. She is also interested in identifying novel bioactive molecules which would serve as drug
candidates, assess the efficacy, potential toxicities and safety of finished herbal products used in
Traditional medicine. In addition, she is keen on the documentation of traditional knowledge of
medicinal plants in various communities in Ghana.
Her previous works have established the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing,
anthelmintic and antimalarial activities of some Ghanaian medicinal plants. Her current research

focuses on the establishment of standard parameters for the quality control of herbal medicines
and ethnobotanical documentation of Ghanaian medicinal plants.
Anna is a professional pharmacist and an active member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana
(PSGH), and two of its interest/practice groups: the Academia, Social and Research Pharmacist
Association of Ghana (ASRPA) and the Lady Pharmacist Association of Ghana (LAPAG). She has,
over the years served in various leadership roles in the Society and currently serves as Secretary to the
Greater Accra Regional Branch of PSGH (where her team of executives leads activities of over 2,000
pharmacists in and around Ghana’s capital, Accra. She is also a member of the Society for Medicinal
Plants and Natural Products Research (GA), African Phytomedicine Scientific Society (APSS), and the
Organization for Women in Science in Developing Countries (OWSD).
She has served and continue to serve on several committees in the University and Faculty including the
Executive Committee of the Central University Teachers Association (CUTA), the Research and
Scientific Conference Planning Committee of the of the School of Pharmacy, the University’s
Programme Advisory Committee, an Examination Chief Invigilator (Centre 4), the University
Committee for the Development of Post-programs for the School of Pharmacy, Committee for the
revision of the Doctor of Pharmacy syllabus for re-accreditation. She has recently been appointed th e
chairperson of the Time-Table Committee for the University.
