CU PARTICIPATES IN FDA MAIDEN SCIENTIFIC FORUM

Central University participated in the maiden edition of the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) Scientific Forum at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday 14th September 2023 themed ‘Protecting Public Health and Safety Through Partnerships’.

The forum featured keynote speeches from the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyeman Manu and the Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof Rita Dickson.

As part of the Authority’s strategic objective to promote food and medicine safety governance through the promotion of interagency collaboration, the Authority had GIZ, USAID, Pharmanova, WHO and Atlantic Lifesciences as its strategic partners for the Scientific Forum. There were panel discussions held concurrently on various topics of relevance, as well as poster presentations by researchers to participants in-person and online.

The FDA established in 1997, and mandated through the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), provides and enforces standards in the manufacture, import, export, sale, and distribution of food, drugs (herbal/allopathic/veterinary) cosmetics, medical devices, household chemical substances, tobacco and tobacco products, blood products and the regulation of clinical trials in a bid to safeguard public health and safety.

Central University was represented at the stakeholder forum by Dr. Saviour Adjenti, Ag. Dean of the School of Medical Sciences; Dr. Christina Osei-Asare, Ag. Dean of the School of Pharmacy; and Ms. Akua Agyeiwaa-Afrane, a Senior lecturer at the Department of Economics and Development Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS).

Central University is a leader in science education in the private tertiary education sector and offers among others, Bachelor of Science degrees in Physician Assistantship, Nursing, Public Health and Nursing.
