Civil Engineering is a discipline that focuses on the planning, design, location, construction, material testing, operation and maintenance of private and public works projects. Private and public works projects such as buildings, roads, dams, harbors, bridges, water supply and sewerage systems are considered as an integrated components of civil infrastructure and facilities that support human settlements in towns, districts and countries.
The University offers training in five broad Engineering sub-disciplines that leads to the award of the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. These sub disciplines are: Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Environmental Engineering.
Key Objectives
To train engineers with a holistic outlook by complementing the knowledge and understanding of Civil Engineering principles with practical skills that will make graduates fully functional as problem solvers.
Real-World Application
Civil Engineers, like all other engineers are innovators who use scientific principles and tools to find solutions to problems. One of the pressing challenges Civil Engineers are facing is how to convert resources to social, commercial and social infrastructure to enhance human welfare with minimal impact on the environment.
As many studies have warned, unless unsustainable human activities on the environment are checked, the earth’s capacity to support a habitable human life will be threatened.
In addition to designing environmentally responsive projects, Civil Engineers are needed to make repairs, retrofit and replace old infrastructure. They must also find answers to the age-old problems of natural hazards on human settlements such as coastal erosion and flooding as well as collaborate with policy makers to plan and design better communities.

Career opportunities in Civil Engineering can be found in both public and private sectors across government, ministries, metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies; private local and multinational construction/ engineering companies, consultancies and environmental organizations.
Entry Requirements
WASSCE and SSSCE: The minimum requirements for admission into the programme are passes in three (3) core subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE)
OR
The West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, AND passes in three (3) elective subjects at SSSCE/WASSCE level, namely, Elective Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
The aggregate score of the 6 subjects should not exceed 24 in the SSSCE or 36 in the WASSCE. All passes should be grade D (SSSCE) or better or C6 (WASSCE) or better.
GCE Entrants:
Applicants must have credits in at least five (5) GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science Subject, AND two passes at GCE A-Level in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, plus a pass in General Paper.
Mature Applicants:
Must be at least 25 years old and must have credits in five (5) GCE O’ Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and a Science subject, with at least 3 years relevant working experience. Candidates will be required to pass a qualifying examination conducted by the Department, and an interview.
HND holders:
Applicants with Civil Engineering certificates who graduated within the range of First Class to Second Class (Lower Division) may also be considered for admission to an appropriate level. Candidates are required to have passes at credit level in Mathematics, Science subjects and English Language. This is the basic Departmental requirement.
