Central University Library Directorate Marks Library Week with CSR Outreach to Tema General Hospital

The 2026 Library Week celebration was held from 7th to 11th April 2026, under the theme: “AI and Information Literacy: The Role of Academic Libraries.” As part of activities marking the week, the University’s Library Directorate undertook a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) outreach to the Tema General Hospital on Thursday, 9th April 2026.

The visit focused on the Child Health Unit, where the Library team engaged children on admission in a reading session designed to inspire a love for books while providing comfort and relaxation during their recovery. The initiative sought to inculcate the habit of reading among the children and offer them a moment of relief and mental engagement amid their medical challenges.

In addition to the reading session, the Directorate made a significant donation to the Unit, including a lockable bookshelf stocked with 280 copies of storybooks, bedsheets, and pedal dustbins. Toiletries were also distributed to each child on admission, bringing smiles and a sense of care to the young patients.

This outreach reflects Central University’s commitment to extending the impact of academic libraries beyond the classroom, demonstrating how literacy and compassion can intersect to support community wellbeing. It also underscores the relevance of information access and reading culture in nurturing young minds, even in healthcare settings.

The Library Directorate expressed optimism that the donated items will be properly maintained and will contribute meaningfully to enhancing the quality of care and comfort provided by the Child Health Unit. The Directorate further reaffirmed its dedication to initiatives that promote literacy, learning, and social responsibility within and beyond the University community.
