Central University on Tuesday 21st April, 2026 welcomed Mr. Alex Birks, Chief Executive Officer of the Award for Training in Higher Education (ATHE), United Kingdom, and his delegation for an institutional visit aimed at strengthening collaboration and enhancing programme delivery.

The visiting team was received by Dr. Eunice Adu-Darko, Director of the University’s Centre for Distance and Professional Education (CDPE), who led engagements focused on reviewing the progress and impact of ATHE programmes at the University.

ATHE is a global awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual since 2011 and recognised by several international accrediting bodies, including the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). With presence in over 40 countries and partnerships with more than 240 centres worldwide, ATHE provides qualifications for both school-age and adult learners, supporting academic advancement and career progression.

Central University has been a recognised ATHE Learning Centre since 2021, offering the ATHE Diplomas as part of its commitment to expanding access to higher education. The University’s 8-Month Pre-University Access Programme has become a vital pathway for Senior High School graduates, enabling them to pursue undergraduate studies in fields such as Business, Information Technology, Health and Social Care, and Law—either at Central University or at partner institutions globally.

During the visit, Mr. Birks outlined ten strategic directions to guide the future of the ATHE programme. Key among these were strengthening institutional partnerships, advancing research in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and robotics—particularly through global collaborations—and the establishment of the ATHE Academy, an initiative designed to track and support ATHE students worldwide.

The delegation engaged with students and faculty, gaining first-hand insights into the teaching and learning experience. A separate meeting was also held between the ATHE leadership, including Ms. Ann O’Toole, Head of Standards, and the University’s Management to discuss strategic alignment and opportunities for growth.

As part of the visit, the ATHE team toured key University facilities, including lecture halls, the library, and the CDPE offices, where they interacted with students enrolled in the ATHE programme.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening the partnership, alongside key takeaways and agreed action points aimed at enhancing programme quality, expanding opportunities for students, and advancing the overall impact of the ATHE initiative at Central University.
