Central Law School Holds Strategic Faculty Retreat on Legal Education Reform and Institutional Growth

Central University (CU), a leading faith-based private university in Ghana committed to raising virtuous and transformational leaders, continues to demonstrate thought leadership in higher education through strategic academic engagement. In this spirit, the Central University Faculty of Law (Central Law School) held a one-day faculty retreat on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at theCity Escape Hotel, Miotso–Prampram.

The retreat brought together lecturers from the Miotso Main Campus, Kumasi Campus, and Christ Temple Campus for an intensive roundtable discussion on critical issues shaping legal education in Ghana and the future direction of the Central Law School.

The programme was organised around two key themes:

  1. A critical examination of the Ghana Legal Education Reform Bill, 2025, with particular emphasis on its implications for legal education and professional training in Ghana; and
  2. An assessment of the state of the Central University Faculty of Law, focusing on institutional strengths, existing challenges, and emerging opportunities for growth.

The retreat sought to promote active faculty engagement on the proposed legal education reforms and to develop institutional recommendations that reflect a shared faculty position for consideration by University Management and the College of Law Deans (COLD). It also provided a collaborative platform for identifying challenges confronting the Faculty of Law and proposing practical, forward-looking solutions.

Among the major outcomes of the retreat were:

  • The drafting of a consensus document to be submitted to University Management and the College of Law Deans (COLD); and
  • The development of a structured matrix outlining identified issues alongside corresponding recommendations to guide strategic action.

These outputs are expected to inform decision-making and contribute to strengthening the Central Law School’s position as a leading centre for legal education and professional training in Ghana.

Leadership and Reflections

The retreat was convened by the Dean of the Central Law School, who emphasised the importance of collective reflection, collaboration, and shared responsibility in shaping the future of the Faculty. The strong participation of both full-time and adjunct lecturers enriched the discussions and reaffirmed the Law School’s commitment to academic excellence, integrity, and institutional development, in line with the University’s core values.

Speaking during the retreat, Prof. Ken Attafuah, Dean of the Faculty of Law, underscored the need for innovation that aligns with institutional frameworks, noting that “innovation does not permit you to break standard operating procedures in an institution.”

Advancing the University’s Mission

The retreat reflects Central University’s broader mission of nurturing a vibrant academic community for the study, creation, and dissemination of knowledge through research, training, and service. As the University continues to grow—currently enrolling nearly 8,000 undergraduate students and over 300 graduate students across multiple disciplines—such strategic engagements remain central to its vision of raising virtuous and transformational leaders for Ghana and the African subregion.

The Central Law School’s proactive engagement with national legal education reforms and its commitment to continuous institutional improvement reinforce Central University’s standing as a forward-looking institution grounded in faith, integrity, and excellence.
