Profile: Dr Erica Danfrekua Dickson (MBChB, PhD)
Dr Erica Danfrekua Dickson is a distinguished Physician and Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years of clinical experience, 25 of which have been dedicated to mental health practice. She is currently the Head of the Therapy and Wellness Department at the Medical Division of the 37 Military Hospital, Accra, where she provides specialist psychological care alongside leadership and supervisory oversight for staff, students, and clinical interns.
Dr Dickson’s professional work spans inpatient and outpatient psychological services, liaison mental health care, and the design and implementation of mental health promotion and prevention programmes. Her clinical expertise covers a wide range of mental health disorders and psychosocial challenges, including trauma-related conditions, with a strong emphasis on holistic, client-centred, and trauma-informed care.
Beyond her hospital-based role, Dr Dickson has consulted extensively for national and international organisations, offering direct psychosocial services, curriculum development, policy advisory support, and professional training. She has contributed to the development of mental health policies for major corporate institutions and continues to provide specialist support to organisations within the banking, telecommunications, insurance, and non-governmental sectors. Her international engagements include consultancy work with the United Nations system, the International Criminal Court, the International Organization for Migration, and several global humanitarian agencies.
Dr Dickson is also an experienced academic and educator, serving as an adjunct lecturer in tertiary institutions and a clinical supervisor for undergraduate and postgraduate psychology students, as well as clinical psychology licensure interns. She has played a pioneering role in professional development initiatives, notably contributing to the conceptualisation of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes at the 37 Military Hospital and serving on its inaugural CPD Committee.
Her academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology and a Master of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ghana, Legon, as well as Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. She is duly licensed by the Medical and Dental Council of Ghana and the Ghana Psychology Council.
Dr Dickson is an active member of several professional bodies and has held key leadership positions within the Ghana Psychological Association, including National President and Immediate Past President. Her research interests focus on neurodevelopmental disorders, suicide, non-communicable diseases, disaster and trauma psychology, and broader health-related psychological issues. She has an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and policy-relevant research contributions at both national and international levels.
