Objectives:

a). Objectives:

The specific objectives to be achieved through the Bachelor of Education (B.ED) Programme include:

  1. Exposure to the relevant theories and practices in curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and learning.
  2. The application of curriculum theories and teaching pedagogy in the development of instructional programmes for school classrooms and other institutions in the Senior High School Levels.
  3. Acquisition of the ability to interprete, implement and evaluate curriculum in the learning environment for various levels of the school system.
  4. Acquisition of the ability to develop and implement appropriate visions, missions, plans and management strategies for schools.
  5. Acquisition of professional qualifications for higher studies or responsibilities in the field of education.
  6. Acquisition of thorough competence in Education and one other teaching subject.
  7. Building of the capacity of students to impact  their own students and communities with positive moral and spiritual values.
  8. Building the capacity of students to relate community, family and school to teaching and learning.

c). Student Learning Outcomes:

We expect that students who undertake the Bachelor of Education curriculum would have cultivated the following set of knowledge and skills and be able to:

  1. Discuss and analyze the relevant theories and practices in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
  2. Apply curriculum theories and teaching pedagogy in the development of instructional programmes for school classrooms and other institutions in the Senior High School Levels.
  3. Interpret, implement and evaluate curriculum in the learning environment for various levels of the school system.
  4. Use appropriate instructional strategies and educational media effectively to promote learning.
  5. Develop and implement appropriate visions, missions, plans and management strategies for schools
  6. Adapt their knowledge and skills for higher studies and professional qualifications and responsibilities in the field of education.
  7. Demonstrate competence in Education and one teaching subject
  8. Draw plans on how they can impact their students and communities with positive moral and spiritual values.
  9. Demonstrate the capability of relating community, family and school to teaching and learning.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Students must meet the general admission requirements of the University for admission to undergraduate programmes, plus any special requirements that apply to their teaching subjects as outlined below.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Candidates

  1. SSSCE Candidates:  credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Mathematics, plus three (3) relevant subjects.
  2. WASSCE Candidates: credit passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects including English Language and Mathematics, plus three (3) relevant subjects. For those choosing to offer English as a Subject Method, a pass in Literature in English is required. Those without Literature in English should have a C5 or better in Core English.

General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates:

Passes in three (3) subjects (at least one of the passes should be a grade D or better).

Also, applicants must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five (5) GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an Arts subject (for science students).

Mature Students

Applicants may be considered for admission as mature students if they fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Must be above twenty-five (25) years;
  2. Must pass an entrance examination and/or an interview.

Additional qualifications may be considered on their own merit. Applicants are advised to contact the relevant department or the Admissions Officer before applying.

Admission Requirements for Foreign Students

Applicants from foreign countries will be required to have equivalent qualifications. Results should be translated according to their equivalence of the grading enacted above.

The entrance certificates of foreign students will be sent to National Accreditation Board (NAB) for verification and evaluation.

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS OF GRADUATES

Graduates of the Higher Education Department are assets to themselves and the nation. 

Thus graduates of the programme could find satisfactory employment in many occupations, especially in educational institutions, including self-employment. Organizations and institutions which employ our students include

  1. Education:
  2. Teaching at the basic and secondary levels
  3. Consultancy
  4. Educational management and administration

Governance:

 Government institutions

  1. Military
  2. Civil Service
  3. Parliament Secretariat/Administration
  4. Government Agencies e.g. Communication Directors
  5. The three arms of government as Secretaries or Special Assistants

Industry:

Any establishment or institution with programmes designed to give orientations to staff or other groups, and those with any kind of educational programmes.
