PROF. JENNIFER E. WELBECK

Prof. Jennifer Welbeck is an Associate Professor of Paediatrics and a paediatrician with 37yrs of extensive experience in clinical practice as well as medical education.

She is a graduate of the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS 1980). She pursued her postgraduate training in Canada gaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) in 1989. She returned home to join the faculty of her alma mater as a lecturer in 1991and has been teaching in the Dept of Child Health of UGMS for the past 35yrs, the last 3 years, albeit, on part-time basis.

She rose through the ranks to become an associate professor in 2005.            At UGMS, she served as head of her department for 6 years, as Vice Dean for 2 years and later as Dean of UGMS/School of Medicine and Dentistry for another 2 years.

Apart from her clinical interest which include neonatology, childhood haematology and oncology, pursuit of further studies in her other interest in Medical Education earned her a FAIMER Fellowship in 2014. She has authored many publications in reputable journals.

She has been an external examiner to a number of sister medical schools in the country eg Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, School of Medical Sciences, University of Cape-Coast School of Medicine, Accra College of Medicine and Family Health Medical School. She is also an examiner of the Foreign Graduate Medical Examination of the Medical and Dental Council (MDC).

She is a Fellow /Trainer of both the West African College of Physicians (WACP) and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS).

She has been involved with accreditation exercises for MDC and Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) as well as for Colleges outside the country in Liberia and The Gambia.

She has served The Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and WHO in many different capacities where her expertise was required. She is a Fellow of the Ghana Medical Association and the Paediatric Society of Ghana.
