Department of Public Health Hosts Allied Health Professions Council to Prepare Final-Year Students for Internship

The Department of Public Health at Central University, under the School of Medical Sciences, hosted representatives of the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) on Thursday, June 25, 2026, for an orientation programme designed to prepare Level 400 students for their upcoming internship placements.

The orientation formed part of the Department’s commitment to equipping students with the professional knowledge, ethical grounding, and practical insights required to transition successfully from academic training to professional practice. As the statutory regulatory body for Allied Health professions in Ghana, the AHPC engaged students on the standards, expectations, and regulatory requirements governing internship and professional practice in the fields of Health Information and Disease Control.

In his opening remarks, the Head of the Department of Public Health, Prof. James-Paul Kretchy, underscored the University’s commitment to producing competent, ethical, and industry-ready graduates. He described internship as a vital bridge between classroom learning and the realities of professional practice, noting that orientation programmes such as this play an essential role in preparing students to excel in their respective placements.

Representatives of the Allied Health Professions Council guided students through key aspects of the internship process, highlighting professional ethics, workplace conduct, regulatory compliance, and the responsibilities expected of allied health professionals. They also encouraged students to embrace the internship experience as an opportunity to develop practical competencies, build professional networks, and contribute meaningfully to healthcare delivery.

An interactive question-and-answer session allowed students to seek clarification on internship requirements, professional licensing procedures, workplace expectations, and career development pathways. The discussions provided valuable insights that will help students navigate their internships with confidence and professionalism.

The orientation reflects Central University’s broader commitment to strengthening collaboration with professional regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders to ensure that graduates are well prepared to meet the demands of the healthcare sector and contribute effectively to national development.

Students were encouraged to uphold the University’s core values of Faith, Integrity, and Excellence as they embark on the next phase of their professional journey and represent the University in their various internship institutions.

Present at the event were the Dean of the School of Medical Sciences, Prof. Jenifer Welbeck, the Head of the Department of Public Health, Prof. James-Paul Kretchy, as well as faculty and staff of the Department of Public Health.
