Your Pathway to the Ghana Bar Begins Here
Following the enactment of the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170) and the introduction of a new framework for legal education and professional legal training in Ghana, Central Law School (CLS) is pleased to invite applications for its Pre-Bar Course, scheduled to run from September 2026 to July 2027.
The Pre-Bar Course forms part of the transitional arrangements accompanying the implementation of the new legal education regime. It is designed to prepare eligible LLB graduates for progression to the Law Practice Training (LPT) Course and, ultimately, qualification for admission to the Ghana Bar.
Who May Apply?
Applications are invited from:
- Final-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) students graduating in the 2025/2026 academic year;
- Graduates of Central Law School holding an LLB degree;
- LLB graduates of any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC); and
- Backlog LLB graduates seeking admission to professional legal training under the new legal education framework.
The Transitional Pathway to the Ghana Bar
The Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170) establishes a new framework for legal education in Ghana, comprising academic legal education, professional legal training, and qualification for admission to the Bar.
As part of the transition to this new regime, the Attorney-General has directed that certain categories of LLB graduates undertake a Pre-Bar Course before proceeding to the Law Practice Training (LPT) Course.
The Pre-Bar Course is therefore a transitional bridging programme, intended to provide the theoretical foundation required for entry into professional legal training under the new framework.
Who Is Covered by the Transitional Arrangement?
The Pre-Bar Course is intended principally for:
- Final-year LLB students graduating in the 2025/2026 academic year; and
- Backlog LLB graduates seeking admission to professional legal training under the new regime.
The arrangement is expected to operate for a limited transitional period while the new legal education framework is fully implemented.
The Transitional Route to Qualification
For persons covered by the transitional arrangement, the pathway to qualification as a lawyer will be:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree
- Pre-Bar Course (Transitional Requirement)
- Law Practice Training (LPT) Programme
- National Bar Examination
- Call to the Bar
Important Note
The Pre-Bar Course is not a course expressly prescribed by the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170). Rather, it is a temporary transitional measure introduced to facilitate the implementation of the new legal education framework and to provide a structured pathway for affected LLB graduates into the Law Practice Training Course.
Subjects to Be Offered
The programme will cover the following courses:
- Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
- Family Law
- Interpretation of Deeds and Statutes
- Commercial Law
- Company Law
Students will not be required to retake any of the above subjects that they successfully completed during their LLB programme.
Successful participants will receive certification confirming completion of the required theoretical component for progression to the Law Practice Training Course at an accredited institution.
