BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ECONOMICS WITH LAW

The BSc in Economics with Law is a single-major programme in which Economics serves as the major field and Law as the minor. The programme is designed to enhance the analytical and legal skills of graduates in economics with a background in law. Students will be able to apply fundamental legal knowledge to improve relevant policy decisions and implementation. The role of regulatory institutions in promoting efficient functioning of the market system is evident in practice and in the literature.

Uniqueness of the Programme

The BSc. in Economics with Law is strategically designed to emphasise the analytical and legal skills acquisition of learners. Students will take courses in two disciplines throughout the four-year degree programme – economics as a major from the Department of Economics & Development Studies and a minor in law from the Faculty of Law, to fulfil the requirements for the award of the degree.

Inadequacies in Skills

Economists trained with a law background in Ghana are few. Given the growing scope of economic activities with associated conflict of interest among market agents, the role of economists with fundamental knowledge in law cannot be overemphasised. Training students with such expertise will enable a better definition and allocation of property rights for a smooth operation of the market.

Aims of the Programme

The programme aims to produce skilled graduates with strong analytical competencies in law and economics to meet the growing demand for professionals across diverse sectors. It also seeks to build research capacity in the interdisciplinary fields of law and economics in response to evolving societal and developmental needs. In addition, the programme is designed to enhance understanding of the role of legal and regulatory institutions in national development, governance, and evidence-based policymaking.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. Equip graduates with core competencies in economics, law, and policy analysis to address complex socio-economic challenges.
  2. Build research and analytical capacity for evidence-based and interdisciplinary scholarship.
  3. Develop professional and soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, leadership, ethics, and teamwork.
  4. Prepare graduates for diverse career opportunities in academia, legal practice, regulation, international organizations, public service, and the private sector.
  5. Provide a solid foundation for advanced postgraduate studies in law, economics, public policy, and related fields.
