BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY WITH ECONOMICS


The BSc in Information Technology with Economics is a single-major programme with Information Technology as the major and Economics as the minor. The programme is relevant in providing digital and analytical skills to graduates in information technology with a background in economics. It will enable graduates of the programme to apply technology, artificial intelligence, programming and analytics through economic lenses to support the national developmental agenda.

In an innovative and technologically evolving modern era, there is a growing need for professionals in data science, machine learning, programming and analytics. Students reading Information Technology with economics will master programming skills with an analytical competence in economics to enable sophisticated applications in data analysis and economic modelling.

Central University is positioned to be strong in applied sciences. In line with this mandate, the Department of Computer Science & Information Technology, together with the Department of Economics and Development Studies, will train students to be industry ready.

 Aims of the Programme

The aims of the programme are the following:

  1. Provide students with a strong foundation in both Information Technology (IT) and Economics, equipping them with interdisciplinary skills for today’s data-driven and digital economy.
  2. Develop graduates who are technologically competent and can apply economic principles to solve real-world problems in business, government, and society.
  3. Foster critical thinking, analytical skills, and ethical awareness in the context of technology adoption, economic development, and policy decision-making.
  4. Encourage innovation, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning in rapidly evolving technological and economic environments.
Objectives of the Programme

The main objectives of the programme are the following:

  1. Apply core information technology concepts, including programming, databases, networks, systems analysis, and cybersecurity, to practical and theoretical problems.
  2. Demonstrate a solid understanding of microeconomic and macroeconomic theories, as well as quantitative and policy analysis techniques.
  3. Design and implement software and information systems that address organizational and economic challenges.
  4. Engage in entrepreneurship or innovation initiatives using IT solutions for economic and social development.

Admission requirements

General University Admission Requirement: The minimum admission requirements of Central University (CU) apply. To enter the programme, applicants must meet the following admission requirements:

  • West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). 
    • Credit passes(A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, and Mathematics, plus three (3) electives in subjects such as Further Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Physics, Chemistry, Geography and History.
  • Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE). 
    • Credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, and Mathematics, plus three (3) electives in subjects such as Further Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Physics, Chemistry, Geography and History.
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Levels.
    • Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and Arts subject (for science students).
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) Applicants
    • Applicants who hold an HND shall be admitted into the programme at Level 200 or 300 depending on the assessment of their diplomas in relation to the programme. 
  • Awards for Training and Higher Education (ATHE) Applicants
    • ATHE Level 3 holders will be admitted into the programme at Level 100. 
  • Mature Applicants
    • The applicants must be at least 25 years old by 31st December of the year preceding the examination. A certified copy of birth certificate is required. The date of issue the birth certificate should not be less than five (5) years from the date of the completion of the admission form. 
    • The applicant must have GCE O’ Level or SSSCE/WASSCE credit passes in English Language and Core Mathematics. Applicants who do not have the required qualifications will take a Special Entrance Examination.
    • The applicant must write the Mature Students’ Entrance Examination which consist of a general paper for all applicants and two papers in the area(s) of specialization desired.
  • Foreign Applicants
    • Applicants must have qualifications equivalent to those stated above.  All academic results and certificates must be translated into English and applicants must demonstrate the ability to read and write in English.
    • Prospective international applicants should note that their certificates will be submitted to the National Accreditation Board (NAB) for evaluation and verification.
