Background Introduction

The Bachelor of Law and Economics programme is a combined-major programme in which both Law and Economics are studied as major disciplines. The programme is relevant in providing rigorous analytical and legal skills for graduates. It will enable graduates as practitioners to have an impact on a wide range of socio-economic issues by applying economic reasoning in legal arguments. Thus, several sectors of the economy require the expertise of legal practitioners with an advanced background in economics. These capacities are crucial in formulating regulatory policies that will enhance a healthy interaction among individuals, firms and government. 

Uniqueness of the Programme

The Bachelor of Law and Economics is purposely designed with a concentration in law and economics throughout the four-year degree programme. It seeks to connect the numerous interrelations and applications between the two disciplines. 

Aims of the Programme

The programme aims to produce high-quality graduates with a strong understanding of the relationship between law and economics and their application across various sectors of Ghana’s economy. It seeks to equip students with knowledge of how legal systems and institutions shape the economic well-being and development of the country, while also highlighting the strategic role of regulatory institutions in promoting economic stability in Ghana.

Objectives of the Programme

The main objectives are to:

  • Nurture students in Economics and Law to be of international standard.
  • Produce graduates with the ability and requisite skills to apply Economics and law in decision-making.
  • Train students to understand the intersection between Law and Economics,
  • Produce graduates who fully understand how regulatory institutions help shape economic policies in Ghana.
  • Produce students who will appreciate the legal underpinnings of economic policies and its role in the development of a nation such as Ghana.
  • Graduates of this programme may proceed to undertake the Bar Professional Course
  • Course and become lawyers; they may also head institutions in Ghana that play a crucial role in developing economic policies in Ghana or may pursue higher degrees in law, economics and other related areas.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the programme will acquire competencies that will prepare them for careers in diverse fields, including:

  • banking and finance,
  • researchers,
  • diplomats,
  • environmental law,
  • health law,
  • corporate law,
  • criminologists; and related areas

Entry Requirements

The minimum admission requirements of Central University (CU) apply. To enter the programme, applicants must meet the following adımission requirements:

  • West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
    • Credit passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, and Mathematics, plus three (3) passes in elective subjects of applicant’s field of study.
  • Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE).
    • Credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, and Mathematics, plus three (3) passes in elective subjects of applicant’s field of study.

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Levels
    • Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and Arts subject (for science students).

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) Applicants
    • Applicants who hold a HND shall be admitted into the programme at Level 200 or 300 depending on the assessment of their diplomas in relation to the programme.

  • Awards for Training and Higher Education (ATHE)
    • ATHE holders may be admitted into the programıme at Level 100.

  • Mature Applicants
    • Applicants must be at least 25 years old by 3Ist December of the year preceding the examination. A certified copy of birth certificate is required. The issue date of the birth certificate should not be less than five (5) years from the date of the completion of the admission form.
    • Applicants must have GCE 0′ Level or SSSCE/WASSCE credit passes in English Language and Core Mathematics. Applicants who do not have the required qualifications will take a Special Entrance Examination
    • Applicants must write the Mature Students’ Entrance Examination, which consists of a general paper for all applicants and two papers in the area(s) of specialization desired.
  • Foreign Applicants
    • To be considered for admission, applicants must have qualifications equivalent to the above. Their results must be translated into English, and they should be able to read and write in English. Prospective foreign applicants must also note that their certificates will be sent to the National Accreditation Board (NAB) for evaluation and verification.
