The Vice-Chancellor of Central University, Professor Kwasi Dartey-Baah, delivered the keynote address at the May 2026 Graduation Ceremony of the Faculty of Commerce, Human Sciences, and Education of Namibia University of Science and Technology in Windhoek, Namibia.

Held on Thursday, 07 May 2026, at the Mercure Hotel in Windhoek, the ceremony was themed: “Advancing Knowledge and Technological Innovations for Sustainable Development.” The event brought together university leadership, faculty, graduating students, families, and distinguished guests to celebrate academic achievement and reflect on the role of higher education in shaping sustainable societies.

In his address, Professor Dartey-Baah congratulated the graduating Class of 2026 and challenged them to become transformational leaders committed to integrity, innovation, and sustainable development across Africa and beyond.

Drawing inspiration from the African philosophy of Ubuntu, he emphasised the interconnectedness of humanity and the shared responsibility of leadership, noting that true success must uplift communities and contribute meaningfully to society.

He observed that while the world is experiencing rapid technological advancement in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital finance, renewable energy, and data-driven governance, many communities across Africa still lack equitable access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

“This is your moment to bridge that gap,” he stated, urging graduates to ensure that knowledge and innovation remain rooted in humanity and service.

Addressing graduates from disciplines including Accounting, Economics, Governance, and Management Sciences, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that their decisions would shape institutions, economies, and nations. He reminded them that leadership is not only about competence, but also about character and integrity.

“The strength of a nation lies not only in its resources, but in the integrity of those who manage them,” he remarked.

Professor Dartey-Baah challenged the graduates with three key responsibilities: to anchor knowledge in purpose, to lead with integrity, and to innovate with an African vision.

He encouraged them to apply their education to solving real societal problems, promoting transparency, inclusive growth, and responsible leadership. He further urged them to reject corruption and unethical practices, noting that sustainable progress can only be achieved when leadership is grounded in accountability and moral conviction.

Speaking on innovation, he called on graduates to develop solutions that reflect African realities and respond effectively to local challenges rather than merely replicating external models.

“Africa’s future will not be downloaded; it will be developed,” he declared, drawing applause from the audience.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the importance of balancing economic ambition with social justice and environmental stewardship, stressing that sustainable development requires building systems and institutions that will endure for future generations.

Using the enduring Namib Desert as a metaphor for resilience and sustainability, Professor Dartey-Baah encouraged graduates to pursue lasting impact rather than short-term success.

“True progress is not measured by how fast we grow, but by how long what we build endures,” he noted.

He concluded by encouraging the graduates to use their knowledge and leadership to create opportunities for others, build accountable institutions, and champion innovations that serve humanity.

The address reaffirmed Central University’s commitment to academic excellence, ethical leadership, and global engagement, while strengthening institutional ties and collaboration across the African higher education landscape.
