CU ALUMN FOCUS-Mr. Mawuli Atiemo

Mr. Mawuli Atiemo, the man we are spotlighting for our #AlumFocus this week, is the Country Lead for Zipline Ghana, the medical drone delivery giant that delivered over 500,000 COVID-19 vaccines to dosing centers, mostly within hard-to-reach areas around all four of its distribution centers in Ghana.

Indeed, the story of Mawuli exemplifies the training offered here at Central University, with the aim to equip our students to be useful to industry beyond their field of study; to transition smoothly from one discipline to another and still excel. Mawuli Atiemo is a pharmacist by profession with over fifteen years of multi-sectoral wealth of experience in the pharmaceutical, diagnostics, and logistics industry, stretching across various business development functions.

In his own words, “those university-wide courses such as leadership, life skills, etc. we took here have proven vital to my career growth and transitions.” Over the years, Mawuli has demonstrated rare leadership responsibility in the various positions he has held, including building and developing talents, managing high-performing teams, and increasing sales – all as a trained pharmacist.

It is interesting to observe how Mawuli, joined Zipline from AstraZeneca as the General Manager and then worked his way up through the ranks to become the Ghana Country Lead in July 2020. At AstraZeneca, through his leadership as Sales Manager in 2017, the team he headed delivered the 2018 budget with strong double-digit growth and won the Best Sales Team in Sub-Saharan Africa for 2018, the Best Sales Manager Award for Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Circle of Excellence MEA (Middle East Africa) winner.

Again, Mawuli played a core role in AstraZeneca Sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) growth, leading both the business and the company’s strategic objectives and driving the execution of sales and marketing initiatives in Ghana. His valued contribution to the business has been recognized at both the AstraZeneca African Cluster and Middle East Africa (MEA) level.

When not at work, Mawuli – a former student of St. Augustine’s College, Cape Coast – is an avid social person and loves spending time connecting with people and building relationships. He is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Accra Airport-City and led the establishment of the first Rotary E-Club in Ghana during the COVID pandemic. In 2019, he led a team of four pharmacists to win the first FIP Hackathon Competition in Ankara, Turkey. He traces these traits of service and community development to his days at Central University. While on campus, Mawuli was President of the Ghana Pharmaceutical Students Ghana Pharmaceutical Students Association (GPSA), among others.

Central University takes extreme pride in the success story of Pharm Mawuli. Why? Because he and his cohort were the first batch of Central University’s Pharmacy program who graduated in 2012.
