General Information
Graduate studies at Central University College (CUC) began in 1999 when the School of Theology and Missions mounted the MPhil and MA degree programmes in Religious Studies. In the year 2006, the Graduate School of Business was established to offer programmes in graduate business education. The School admitted its first batch of MBA students in February, 2007.
Following the merger of the Graduate School of Business with the School of Business Management and Administration to form the Central Business School in the 2010/2011 academic year, University management approved the establishment of the School of Research and Graduate Studies, now School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGS) to coordinate all graduate programmes in the University.
The primary responsibility of the School is to set standards and ensure effective dissemination of high quality research information. The School is also required to maintain high standards in the quality of graduate programmes and to coordinate the various graduate programmes and research activities of graduate students and faculty. The School works with the Deans of Faculty/ School and Heads of Department to develop and administer graduate programmes according to the needs of the University and in accord with the general standards of excellence and sound academic administration established by the University. The School will also facilitate the development of new graduate programmes including the MPhil and the PhD in all the Faculties/Schools of the University.
The Board of Graduate Studies advises the Dean on issues concerning policies and programmes of the School.

Mission
The mission of the School of Graduate Studies is to facilitate and enhance educational experiences and opportunities for all graduate students and to promote excellence in research and other scholarly works.
SGS- General Functions
The School of Graduate Studies shall perform the following functions:
a. appraise candidates, supervisors, course work, thesis topics, titles and synopses for the award of higher qualifications, based upon recommendations from Faculties/School Boards
b. recommend to the Academic Board the appointment of internal and external examiners in respect of written papers, dissertations or theses
c. keep record of all graduate students
d. publish Graduate Students’ Handbook from time to time
e. give provisional approval to graduate examination results upon recommendations from Faculties/School Boards
f. establish and maintain links with graduate schools in other Universities or institutions and promote exchanges of graduate students and staff engaged in graduate work between this University and other institutions
g. liaise with Deans of Faculties/Schools and Heads of Department on all matters relating to graduate studies
h. set up and maintain a resource centre that displays theses/dissertations and abstracts
i. organize, for the professional development of faculty and graduate students, short courses, seminars and workshops on research
supervision, research proposal writing, report writing, research methods and techniques involved in searches on electronic database (E-resource)
j. set standards and ensure effective dissemination of high quality research information.
Admission Requirements
1. Taught Master’s Degree Programmes – M.A/MBA/M.Sc.
An applicant seeking admission to an M.A/MBA/M.Sc. degree programme must:
- Have obtained a good first degree (at least a Second Class) in an appropriate field of study from a recognized University.
b. Satisfy additional requirements prescribed by the faculties/departments. These may include relevant work experience, a written entrance examination and an interview.
c. An applicant who possesses a first degree in the Third Class Division or Pass and who has at least three years working experience may also be considered for admission into the Taught Master’s degree programme. Such an applicant may be required to take preparatory courses and pass a written examination and interview before being considered for admission.
2. Research Master’s Degree Programmes – M.Phil
An applicant seeking admission to an M.Phil degree programme must :
- Have obtained a good first degree (at least a Second Class) in appropriate field of study from a recognized University.
- Submit a proposal of 2-3 pages of A4 Size paper on the intended area of study.
- Satisfy an additional requirement prescribed by faculty/department. These may include relevant work experience, a written entrance examination and an interview.
An applicant who possesses a Taught Master’s degree (M.A. /MBA/M.Sc.) and wishes to enrol in an M.Phil degree programme will be required to take additional relevant courses not exceeding 18 credit hours and present a thesis.
3. Doctor of Philosophy – PhD
A candidate seeking admission into the PhD must:
a. Have a Master’s degree in an appropriate field of study from a recognized university.
b. Submit a proposal of 3-5 pages of A4 Size paper on intended area of research.
c. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the faculty /department. These may include relevant work experience, a written examination and an interview.
