Central University proudly celebrates Nana Kwame Kwabi Boateng, an alumnus of the School of Pharmacy, Class of 2018, whose groundbreaking research is reshaping the scientific understanding of how blood clots form.

Nana Boateng is the first author of a pioneering study published in Blood—the world’s leading journal in hematology. The international research team he worked with has uncovered a crucial new role for the enzyme tissue transglutaminase (TG2) in modifying a specific part of the fibrin protein known as the β-chain, particularly during traumatic injury.

Until now, the β-chain was thought to play no significant role in blood clot formation. This discovery challenges long-held assumptions, providing fresh insight into clot structure and function, and opening new possibilities in trauma care, wound healing, and the treatment of clotting disorders.

The study brought together an impressive global team, including scientists from the University of Colorado, Michigan State University, Rutgers University, and Denver Health Medical Center, co-led by Professors Kirk C. Hansen and James P. Luyendyk.

Importantly, the research also embodies the One Health approach, bridging human and veterinary medicine. Its findings could revolutionize surgical recovery and care across species.

Reflecting on the study’s impact, Nana Kwame remarked:

“If you have blood, this discovery could one day save your life.”

His remarkable achievement not only advances global medical science but also exemplifies the excellence and impact of Central University alumni worldwide.
