From Motherhood to Master’s: Lorrencia’s Chevening Story

When our alumna Lorrencia Adam Nkrumah announced on social media that she had been selected as a Chevening Awards Scholarship recipient to pursue further studies at Newcastle University, we received the news with great joy. It was a moment of pride and honour for us as an institution. Here’s the inspiring story behind her achievement:

Encouraged by her husband, Lorrencia enrolled at Central University as a mature student, often seen with her baby on her back. Her determination was so strong that, at times, she was even assisted in the lecture hall by her lecturers — Denise Diana Duncan, PhD Duncan (Head of the Department of Communication and Media Studies), Dr. Marian Tsegah, Kofi Akpabli, and Abena A. Gyampo.

A few years ago, when we invited Lorrencia as a guest speaker at our International Women’s Day celebration, she shared more about her journey. Before becoming a student at CU, she had already gained valuable experience as a broadcast journalist, yet she yearned for more — hence her decision to return to the classroom.

Armed with her CU degree in Communication, Lorrencia went on to secure opportunities with multinationals such as Newmont Corporation, Barry Callebaut Group, and, more recently, Nestlé, where she served as Corporate Communication and Corporate Affairs Specialist for Central and West Africa. Her communication skills have also been put to use in many ways at her local church, ICGC Zoe Temple.

As she embarks on this new chapter at Newcastle University through the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, we are confident that Lorrencia will continue to make Central University proud.

Best wishes, Lorrie.
