ABOUT THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) was established in 2006 with four departments: English, French, Economics, and Environment and Development Studies. In 2007, the University established the Vision and Legacy Unit, which functioned as a department under the Faculty. In 2011, the Faculty expanded with the creation of the Department of Communication Studies. This was followed by the establishment of the William Ofori Atta Institute of Integrity (WOAII) in 2012.

Over time, the Faculty has expanded its academic offerings and reorganized into three (3) departments, each comprising specialized units, in response to rationalization exercises and the growing demand for innovative programmes.  The departments and units are:

  • Department of Social Sciences (DOSS): Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Theology, and Education units, along with the William Ofori Atta Institute of Integrity;
  • Department of Economics and Development Studies: Economics, Environment and Development Studies, and Agri-Business units;
  • Department of Communication and Media Studies:  houses both Communication and Media Studies programme and the Vision and Life Unit.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers diverse undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, combining in-depth training in major disciplines with cross-disciplinary exposure. It also manages all University-wide courses.

PRACTICAL TRAINING SPACES AND RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE

The Central University Research Library supports the informational and research needs of the University community by providing accurate, current, and relevant resources to enhance teaching, learning, and research. Aligned with the University’s vision to develop transformational leaders, the library offers E-Journals, ProQuest E-books, and other resources through its membership in the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH). It also features an automated catalogue powered by the Koha Library Management System for easy access to information.

PARTNERSHIPS – INDUSTRY AND INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS

FASS believes in international collaboration and exchanges. Every year, interested students participate in summer schools abroad. Others spend one semester studying abroad with our partner institutions. This strategy helps to internationalize our curriculum, makes our students more competitive in the global labour market, allows our faculty and students to participate in international and intercultural academic projects and promotes understanding and interactions among the participants.
