On Friday, June 14, 2024, the International Programmes Office (IPO) organized an insightful tour for our international students to two of Ghana’s most iconic destinations in the Central Region: Cape Coast Castle and Kakum National Park. The day was filled with enriching experiences, combining historical education with adventurous exploration. Chaperoning the students on the tour were Dr. Kingsford Kissi Mireku, the Head of IPO; Ps. Reindorf Owusu Bempah, and Michael Smillie.
The tour began with a drive from Accra to Cape Coast, marking many students’ first visit to this region. Upon arrival at Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the group was guided through the castle, gaining profound insights into its role in the transatlantic slave trade. The visit was both educational and moving, offering the students a chance to reflect on the castle’s poignant place in history.
Following the castle tour, the group headed to Kakum National Park, renowned for its spectacular Canopy Walkway. This thrilling adventure took the students high above the forest floor, providing breathtaking views of the lush rainforest. The canopy walkway, coupled with the park’s rich biodiversity, made for an exhilarating experience that perfectly complemented the historical exploration earlier in the day.
