Master of Philosophy (Accounting)
Aim of the Programme
The programme is designed to produce students who will be well-prepared to pursue a career in the challenging fields of accounting. The programme allows students to acquire, develop and apply master’s level knowledge, understanding and skills within accounting. Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to make significant contributions in the area of accounting and develop a successful and satisfying career, both in the private and public sectors.
This is a two-year programme aimed at preparing students with the required skills and knowledge for the field of Accounting.
Objectives
The objectives of the MPHIL Accounting programme are:
- To equip students with the requisite technical knowledge and managerial skills required to function effectively in funds management, and the capacity to maximise the value of shareholder wealth for long-run growth.
- To develop results-oriented professionals capable of functioning at the highest level of their profession, either as Accountants or finance experts in various working environments.
- To produce high calibre and morally sound accounting professionals with integrity in a competitive job market locally and worldwide.
- To equip students with relevant theoretical and practical knowledge, cutting-edge skills, and the required critical reasoning abilities within the context of accounting to fit into the industry at the middle management level.
- To produce graduates capable of analysing, managing, and (re-)structuring ever-changing and complex business problems to make them amenable through modern financial management tools and best practices.
Admission Requirements
- Applicants should possess a good first degree in Accounting, with a minimum of Second Class Lower division from a recognized University. Third Class applicants with a good quantitative background may also be considered for admission.
- Applicants with professional qualifications, e.g. ACCA, CIM, CIMA, CA, can also apply.
- Master of Science in Accounting with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0.
- Master of Science in Accounting with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of below 3.0 should have at least one-year post qualification working experience.
- Applicants with a Master of Science in Accounting shall join the second year of the programme.
- Submit a proposal of 2-3 pages of A4 size paper on the intended area of study
- Applicants must satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the faculty/department. These may include an interview, undertaking a preparatory programme, and a written entrance examination.
Students’ Progression
- There must have been regular attendance at all lectures, tutorials, seminars and assignments submitted.
- Students must pass all university-required courses.
- Students’ performance in the appropriate university examinations must be satisfactory.
- After the first year of the programme, students must make FCGPA of 2.5 and above to be able to progress to the final year

Students’ Graduation:
- Pass all courses and meet all financial obligations. Students must make FCGPA of 2.5 and above to be eligible to graduate.The Master of Philosophy programme shall consist of a minimum of five 3-credit course and a maximum of six 3-credit courses per semester. Total credits shall not be less than 30 credits or more than 36 credits in one academic year. In addition, the student is required to present a thesis to qualify for graduation.
Employment Prospects
Graduates of the programme will have job opportunities with banks, mining institutions, construction, and services sectors of the economy as accountants, treasury managers, investment portfolio managers, risk management consultants, and other finance industry players.
