Programme Objective
This Programme provides a comprehensive overview of ATLAS.ti and introduces participants to the management and exploration of qualitative data, and the assessment of the principles and practice of qualitative data analysis, with emphasis on thematic analysis using ATLAS.ti. Participants will be introduced to how ATLAS.ti may be used to analyse textual, graphical, audio, and video data in a flexible yet, systematic manner. The Programme will be delivered through a combination of guided instruction sessions, discussion sessions, videos, and interactive practical sessions in which participants will be required to use the ATLAS.ti software to analyse qualitative data.
Programme Objective
The Programme will provide participants with the ability to:
- acquire an understanding of the philosophy and the principles underlying qualitative data analysis.
- understand the structure and functions of ATLAS.ti.
- develop the practical skills needed to analyse qualitative data using ATLAS.ti.
- appreciate the importance of reflexivity and positionality in qualitative data analysis.
- be able to assess the quality of qualitative research.
Programme Content
Participants in the programme will develop the following key modules:
Module 1: Introduction to ATLAS.ti and computer-assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDAS).
Module 2: Exploring the basic functions and procedures of ATLAS.ti.
Module 3: Managing the data analysis process using ATLAS.ti.
Module 4: Coding in ATLAS.ti.
Module 5: Concept mapping and data visualization using ATLAS.ti.
Module 6: Small group practical sessions and individual activities to practice coding and thematic analysis of qualitative data using ATLAS.ti.

Dr Joseph Ocran
Dr. Joseph Ocran obtained his PhD in Sociology in 2017 from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Visiting PhD Student (Spring Semester 2017) at the Department of Social Education & Arctic Centre for Welfare and Disability Research, UiT/Norges Arktiske Universititet, Harstad Campus, Norway. He also obtained his MPhil in Sociology in 2011 at the University of Ghana, Legon, and his BA in Sociology and Social Work in 2007 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
He is a Lecturer (2018 – date) at the Department of Social Sciences, Central University. A Tutor (Part-Time) 2008 – 2018 at the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education, Kumasi Centre (University of Ghana). Teaching / Graduate Assistant 2011 – 2013 / 2014 – 2016 at the Department of Sociology, University of Ghana, Legon.
He was awarded the Dean’s Award for Efficiency and Dedication to Work in FASS (CU) in February 2020. University of Ghana/Carnegie Corporation PhD Scholarship Oct. 2014 – July 2017 and Norwegian Government Quota Scholarship, Jan. 2010 – Dec. 2010
He is a member of the Ghana Sociological and Anthropological Association (GSAA)
