The aim of the PharmD Top-up programme is to upgrade practicing pharmacists to the level of Doctor of
Pharmacy (Pharm D).
Key Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to:
i) Provide practicing pharmacists holding the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) degrees
with additional knowledge and skills relevant to contemporary pharmacy practice.
ii) Train and equip practising pharmacists with additional skills, knowledge, capabilities,
and attitudes to improve pharmaceutical care delivery and enhance the quality of life
of patients.
iii) Stimulate a life-long learning attitude in practising pharmacists.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have obtained a B.Pharm degree or its equivalent from a recognized
institution. In addition, the applicant must be a practicing pharmacist with at least two (2)
years working experience and in good standing with a recognised regulatory body.
Furthermore, the applicant must pass a selection interview in order to be considered.
Employment
Candidates who will be admitted into the programme are already employed in various sectors of
the pharmaceutical industry. The Pharm D graduates would be value-added pharmacists in the
existing healthcare structure: in hospitals, community pharmacies and drug-regulatory bodies. In
addition, graduates can work in other healthcare structures that are emerging, such as home
healthcare and public health.
Graduates of the programme would also have opportunity of employment in the following
sectors;
i. Hospitals and Clinics
ii. Drug Enforcement Agencies (Customs Excise Preventive Service/Food and Drugs
Authority/Police Forensic Units)
iii. Community Service (Pharmacy Retail Outlets)
iv. Academia (after post graduate training)
v. Industrial Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
vi. Drug Information Link between Manufacturers and Hospitals, Drug Supply, and
Management Body.
vii. Pharmacy Council, Ghana, Food and Drugs Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, and the
National Health Insurance Authority
viii. Pharmaceutical Marketing
