The Department of Economics and Development Studies at Central University is a dynamic academic hub committed to advancing knowledge, research, and practical solutions at the intersection of economics, environment, sustainable development, and agribusiness.
Originally established as the Department of Economics in 2006, the Department has evolved in response to changing national and global development priorities. In 2021, it was transformed into the Department of Economics and Development Studies through the strategic merger of the Departments of Economics, Environment and Development Studies as well as Agribusiness. This integration created a more interdisciplinary and forward-looking academic unit, better positioned to address complex economic, environmental, and development challenges through a holistic and sustainable approach.
Further restructuring in 2025 strengthened the Department’s interdisciplinary focus and expanded its academic offerings through strategic collaborations with the disciplines of Law, Information Technology (IT), and Computer Science. These collaborations have facilitated the development and accreditation of the following innovative combined programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year:
- Bachelor of Science in Economics and Computer Science (combined)
- Bachelor of Science in Economics with Computer Science (major/minor)
- Bachelor of Science in Economics and Information Technology (combined)
