PROFESSOR PHILIP T. NORTEY

Professor Philip Nortey graduated from the university of London: PhD (Birkbeck College) Analytical Chemistry and BSc Hons (Chelsea College), MSc Analytical Chemistry from the University of East London. He has spent most of his life schooling and working in the UK. He is professionally qualified Chartered Chemist (UK) and Chartered Scientist (UK) from the Royal Society of Chemistry. Also he was nominated for the award of the Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts for contribution to science and manufacture.

He worked in research at the London Royal Free Hospital special Hematology department as Research Fellow and in Public Health at the Central Middlesex Hospital. He worked for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Merck Pharmaceuticals (UK). At Merck he was a specialist in High Potency Drugs – Azathioprine (immune-suppressant drug), Tamoxifen for breast cancer and Cyproterone (sexual libido suppressant). At Ivax Pharmaceuticals London his research team worked on and developed new combi asthmatic inhalers. He worked at the QC department of Regent Pharmaceuticals London where he trained analysts.

He spent a lot of his research years on iron chelation therapy drugs for sickle cell and thalassaemia where his team developed the first innovative drug as tablets for transfusion iron overload iron removal from the body. The drug was patented and licensed and called Deferiprone.

He was assessor for Sickle cell research grants applications working for NICE (UK) National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

He has a lot of experience in pharmaceutical QC and the development of new innovative improved High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) columns. He is currently in academia at the School of Pharmacy, Central University since 2017, lecturing Physical, inorganic, organic, analytical chemistry and industrial pharmacy.

He has over 20 publications and edited a number of publications and supervised PhD students.
